Castle Crags State Park — (800) 444-7275 or (530) 235-2684; located 15 miles south of Mt. Shasta City off Interstate 5 near Castella. From Interstate 5 take the Castella exit and turn right (west) for about 1/4 mile to the Park entrance. The Park is situated under the Crags at an elevation of 2,100 feet with 64 RV and tent sites with restrooms and hot showers and an interpretive center. Open all year with access to hiking trails, rock climbing, and picnicking.
McArthur-Burney Falls State Park — Located in Shasta County just several miles south of the Siskiyou County line. There are two ways of getting there, one is from Interstate 5, take Highway 299 East from Redding, proceed to the town of Burney. McArthur Burney Falls Memorial State Park is just outside of the community of Burney on Highway 89. You can also take Highway 89 southeast of McCloud towards the town of Burney. Camping, boating, fishing, and swimming and nature hikes are available.
Castle Lake — Located 10 miles west of Mt. Shasta City at elevation 5,400 feet, from Interstate 5, take W. A. Barr Rd., cross Box Canyon Dam then turn left on Castle Lake Rd. Campground is 1/2 mile below Castle Lake, the largest and deepest alpine lake in the area. Portable restrooms available but No Drinking Water. Offers swimming, fishing, picnicking, hiking, camping. Hiking trails lead to pristine mountain lakes, Heart Lake and Upper Castle Lake. 530-926-4511
Gumboot Lake — Located approximately 20 miles west of Mt. Shasta City at an elevation of about 6,000 feet. The South Fork road is washed out so use your Forest Service map for directions. Restrooms are available with no drinking water. This is an alpine lake that offers swimming, fishing, small rafts or boats with no motors. 530-926-4511
McBride Springs (elevation 4,780 feet) — The Forest Service maintains two campgrounds located off the Everitt Memorial Highway. The first camp is McBride Springs located at the 5-mile marker about 6 miles from the Bunny Flat trailhead. There are restrooms and drinking water available, and the 9 sites available are surrounded by tall pines and firs. The campground is closed during the winter. Contact the Ranger Station in regards to availability and the overnight fee. 530-926-4511
Panther Meadows (elevation 7,500 feet) — The second and most spectacular campground is Panther Meadows located close to mile 13, about 2 miles above Bunny Flat. This camp has a parking lot with a short walk to the 10 walk-in campsites. There are maintained pit toilets, but no drinking water is available. The stay limit is 3 days with no overnight fee required. The view is splendid and the camp is protected from the wind; although the nights do get cold here, even during the summer. This camp is only accessible by skis or snowmobiles during the winter, and on heavy snow years, the road leading to the camp may not be open till midsummer. Sand Flat (elevation 6,800 feet) — Another site available for camping is at the Sand Flat trailhead located about a mile below Bunny Flat. There are two parking lots each a mile apart and both have a dirt road which form a loop leading to Sand Flat. During the summer, the Flat makes for an excellent overnight camp and the trail leading out of the flat merges with the Bunny Flat trail to Horse Camp and on to the summit. If you plan on camping there, check with the Ranger Station to see if the snow has melted from the area. 530-926-4511
Bunny Flat (elevation 6,860 feet) — Climbers arriving on the Mountain late in the day sometimes just pitch a tent in the Bunny Flat parking lot. This will suffice for an overnight stay if you're in a pinch, although it is not encouraged for more than a quick night's sleep. Camping is allowed inside the National Forest which means you can pitch a tent almost anywhere around the Bunny Flat area. Camping is also allowed inside the Wilderness Area as long as you have your permit with you. Check with the Ranger Station to see if campfire permits are required.530-926-4511
McCloud Falls/Fowlers Campground — Located 5 miles east of McCloud on Hwy 89. Situated along the McCloud river, among a shaded forest of tall pine and fir trees with trails leading to spectacular lower, middle, and upper falls on the McCloud river. Offers fishing, camping, hiking, and 39 campsites with drinking water and handicapped restrooms. Trailers OK. 530-964-2184
Algoma — This scenic camp site along the McCloud River is located 14 miles east of the town of McCloud off Highway 89. With 8 sites and no drinking water all you will have time to do is relax and fish in the McCloud River. 530-964-2184
