McCloud River Mountain Music: Andy Irvine

Andy Irvine

ANDY IRVINE is one of the great Irish singers, his voice one of a handful of truly great ones that gets to the very soul of Ireland. He has been hailed as "a tradition in himself".

Musician, singer, songwriter, Andy has maintained his highly individual performing skills throughout his over 60-year career.

Andy has been at the helm of legendary bands like Sweeney’s Men in the mid 60s, to the enormous success of Planxty in the 70s, and then Patrick Street, Mozaik, LAPD and recently Usher’s Island. Andy has been a world music pioneer and an icon for traditional music and musicians.

As a soloist, Andy fills the role of the archetypal troubadour with a show and a travelling lifestyle that reflect his lifelong influence, Woody Guthrie. To quote the Irish Times, "Often copied, never equalled", his repertoire consists of Irish traditional songs, dexterous Balkan dance tunes and a compelling canon of his own self-penned songs.

McCloud River Mountain Music: The Rosa Lees

The Rosa Lees

The Rosa Lees hail from the hills of sunny Southern Oregon and trace a distinct line between their music and the vision of female bluegrass pioneers such as Hazel Dickens, Alice Gerrard, Rose Maddox, and beyond.

At the forefront of their music lies an emphasis on closely blended harmonies, hard-charging rhythms, and lyrically potent songs. Their repertoire mingles elements of traditional bluegrass with traces of old-time fiddle and banjo tunes, classic country, old-world Celtic music, and gospel. They prioritize songs with meaning and a strong turn of phrase, working to fuse all these ingredients into the original songs that punctuate their sets.

Audiences consistently rave about the distinct blend of their vocal harmonies and instrumental acuity, not to mention their playful on-stage demeanor. The Rosa Lees are Rachel Buklad on banjo, Jessie Monter on fiddle, Holly Hurley on bass, and Bekkah McAlvage on guitar.

Shasta Mountain Guides Pacific Crest Trail Women’s Backpacking Trip

Discover the peace and power of wild places on this three-day backpacking trip on one of the world's longest hiking trails. Perfect for women who want to try backpacking, advance their backcountry skills or get a taste of life as a thru-hiker, this trip is a learning journey that touches a spectacularly scenic portion of the Pacific Crest Trail. The PCT stretches 2,650 miles along America's west coast, through some of the country's most rugged and dramatic terrain. Our trail section is accessible to those who want an incredible backpacking experience but don't have a lot of time.
By day, we hike through mountain meadows, along open ridgelines and by the shores of gemlike alpine lakes, with Mount Shasta towering on the horizon. Our expert female guides share their knowledge of wilderness travel and the fauna, flora, geology and history of the land. We camp near lakes, allowing plenty of time to relax. By night, we savor star-filled skies and remote solitude. Our final, optional adventure is an ascent of Mount Eddy, the highest of the Klamath Mountains.

  • Disconnect from everyday life in the beautiful California mountains

  • Enjoy a cup of hot cocoa while sitting under a blanket of stars

  • Create lifelong memories exploring the quiet corners of pristine wilderness

  • See the world through the eyes of a thru-hiker along a remote alpine ridge

  • Designed for women, guided by women

We aim to create personal connections with Mt. Shasta and the surrounding land, and lasting connections to your new climbing community.

We have logged over 40 years of experience guiding on Mount Shasta and are the original guiding company for this special mountain. We know Shasta better than anyone and aim to provide a professional and positive experience for all.

JCA: Nick Gareiss & Simon Chrisman

Nic Gareiss & Simon Chrisman mesh time and timbre to create dynamic performances of music and dance!

Nic Gareiss & Simon Chrisman

Nic Gareiss (percussive dance, bouzouki, vocals) and Simon Chrisman (hammer dulcimer) met in 2007 at a fiddle festival in the Californian redwoods and have been exploring sound and movement together ever since. Both innovators on their instruments, Nic and Simon bring their unique approaches together for traditional song, percussive dance, instrumental tunes, improvisation and new compositions, engaging interlocking rhythms and dynamic textures. Well-known for his work with the groundbreaking new acoustic string band The Bee Eaters, Simon's music combines “chamber music’s finely calibrated arrangements with bluegrass’s playful virtuosity and pop music’s melodic resourcefulness.” (Boston Herald) Noted for his “dexterous melding of Irish and Appalachian dance” (New York Times) and described as “the most inventive and expressive step dancer on the scene” (Boston Herald), Nic has performed with many of the luminaries of contemporary traditional music and dance, including The Chieftains, The Gloaming, Phil Wiggins, Liz Carroll, Bruce Molsky, Bill Frisell, Alasdair Fraser and Natalie Haas. Together, Nic and Simon adventure into the world of time and timbre to create a breathtaking evening-length performance of song, instrumental music, and percussive dance.
